The hidden job market is real, and it's massive
The LinkedIn Easy Apply button is the most visible part of the job market. It is not where most jobs are filled. According to multiple studies, up to 70% of roles are filled through networking and internal referrals before they ever appear on a job board. The jobs that do get posted publicly have already been circulated through the hiring manager's network and rejected by some of those candidates.
That doesn't make job boards useless. It does mean that if public postings are your only strategy, you're competing in the most crowded, lowest-conversion channel available, while 70% of opportunities go entirely uncontested by anyone outside the hiring manager's existing network.

Why the Hidden Job Market Exists
Posting a job publicly is expensive, slow, and high-effort. A typical public posting generates 200 to 300 applications, requires weeks of screening, and still often results in a bad hire. Hiring managers naturally prefer to fill roles by promoting internally, asking trusted colleagues for referrals, or reaching back out to strong candidates from previous searches who didn't quite fit at the time.
This is not a conspiracy. It's rational efficiency. Your job is to put yourself inside that efficiency loop.
Strategy 1: Warm Outreach to Target Companies
Build a list of 20–30 companies you want to work at. For each, identify 3–5 people on LinkedIn: one in a senior role in your function, one in a peer role, and one recruiter or HR business partner. Send a connection request with a 2-sentence personalised note — reference something specific about their work or the company's product.
One week after connecting, send a short message: "I've been following [company's] work on [specific project/product] and would love to learn more about the team and how you got there. Would you be open to a 20-minute call?" This is an information interview request, not a job ask. You'll be surprised how often it leads to one.
Strategy 2: Alumni Networks Are Untapped Gold
Your university alumni network is one of the highest-conversion channels in the job market. People feel an instinctive obligation to help fellow alumni — it's a documented psychological phenomenon. Use LinkedIn's Alumni filter to find people from your university working in your target function at your target companies. The connection rate and response rate from alumni outreach is typically 3–4x higher than cold outreach.
